Electric Blanket

By cutting back the temperature setting on your central heating system and using an electric blanket or electric mattress pad while lounging or sleeping its possible to save a considerable amount of money. Why heat the whole house when you will be stationary in one spot for up to eight hours? Depending on the city, its possible to save 1% - 2% of the house heating bill for EACH DEGREE the central heating systems thermostat is lowered for eight hours each day or night. Turning your thermostat from 72 to 65 eight hours a day can save as much as 10% on your annual heating costs. Using an electric blanket (or electric mattress pad warmer) during the night allows you to lower your thermostat by 10 degrees for 8 hours a day and stay cozy and comfortable. For lounging on the sofa at TV time, we use a smaller electric throw and keep the thermostat at 60-65 degrees all the time.

Our research has shown that at a 30-50% setting on both sides of a dual control blanket uses an average of 80 Watts per month or (depending on local energy cost) under $2.00 per month. Consider the cost of heating the entire house to 72.
